Around Sentosa – part 1 of 3

MAY 30, 2011, SINGAPORE – On the 3rd day of our Singapore Family vacation we explored the many attractions of Sentosa (exclusive of Universal Studios Singapore and Resort World Sentosa). Several years ago I used to tell friends that Singapore is so small you can visit all its attractions in just two days. That’s not true anymore (and I am eating my words!). Now you need a full week, maybe even 10 days, to explore all that Singapore has to offer. The people running tourism in Singapore are amazing. They are able to offer more with whatever little piece of real estate they have. I hope I can say the same for the Philippines in the not so distant future.

Going back to our Sentosa adventure, it was a full and fast-paced day for us, starting at about 10 AM until 10 PM, with hardly any real rest in between. Below are the major attractions we visited.

A Beach Vacation in Singapore?

SINGAPORE is not exactly known as a beach destination. I’ve been to Singapore a number of times before and it never occurred to me that there are beach resorts there. Well there is at least one.  And it is quite good. Surprisingly good.

I first learned about Siloso Beach when my ex-exgirlfriend and I were making our hotel bookings for our 5-day-4-night family holiday in Singapore last May.  We were desperately booking our accommodations in one of the new hotels in Resort World Sentosa.  However, having serendipitously timed our vacation to coincide with the Grand Opening of Universal Studios Singapore we had difficulties with our hotel booking.  All the hotels in Resort World Sentosa were already fully booked except for Festive Hotel. Even Festive Hotel could only take us in for one night.

That’s when we found out about a section of Sentosa Island known as Siloso Beach. Continue reading

A walk in the (Jurassic) Park

USS Jurassic ParkWE DIDN’T just walk, of course.  We rode, flew, got wet, screamed, wowed, ohed, and ahhed.

We all tried the Canopy Flyer, a seemingly leisurely and “no thrill” ride that is supposed to give a bird’s eye view of the entire Jurassic Park zone.  As it turned out it wasn’t exactly a “no thrill.” The ride was a little bit too fast for comfort, albeit from the observers down below the flyers seem to be coasting along at a leisurely pace.

The Canopy Flyer, however, is just a teaser.  The main attraction in Jurassic Park is the Rapids adventure.  If you’ve been to Enchanted Kingdom here in PH and have tried Rio Grande then you more or less have sort of already experienced Jurassic Park’s Rapids Adventure.  The general concept — even the circular raft — is essentially identical.

The main difference is that there are some nasty cold blooded carnivores trying to eat you in JP Rapids Adventure. Continue reading

Singapore Family Holiday Day 1: Resort World Sentosa (Photo Slideshow)

SO OVER THE WEEKEND I started posting about our recent family holiday in Singapore, having shared our first set of photos in and around Universal Studios Singapore on May 28.

Our first day in Singapore wasn’t really on the 28th but on the 27th. We left NAIA Terminal 3 via Cebu Pacific early morning of May 27 and arrived in Singapore before lunch.

Around Resort World SentosaMy ex-exgirlfriend prepared an “itinerary from hell” for us and the kiddos.  That is to say that we wasted no time on our very first day in Singapore.  Since we were to stay at the Festive Hotel in Resort World Sentosa for our first night in Singapore, the first in our itinerary was to roam around and explore the new Resort World complex and the nearby attractions in Sentosa. Universal Studios Singapore’s Grand Opening (Photo Slideshow)

BY MERE coincidence, we were on the second day of our family holiday in Singapore during the grand opening of Universal Studios Singapore (USS) on May 28, 2011.  Of course we arranged our 5-day Singapore tour so that we will be doing USS on May 28.

We missed the Grand Parade and the Opening Ceremonies in the morning.  Paula Abdul was a special guest, we were told, so we missed the opportunity to meet her in person, too.  I was heartbroken, LOL.

Here’s a slideshow of the photos we took (of ourselves) around USS.  Continue reading
