The City of Nazareth (A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land)

City of Nazareth

Most christians associate Nazareth to Jesus.  In fact, “Jesus of Nazareth” is among the more popular identities of Jesus.

But the fact is, Nazareth is neither the birthplace of Jesus (it is Bethlehem, some 128 kilometers [80 miles] away) nor his hometown (Capernaum has this distinction).

Nazareth is the hometown of St. Joseph, surrogate human father of Jesus Christ. It is perhaps the fact that Jesus spent his years as a child in Nazareth, helping Joseph in his carpentry job, that made Nazareth got attached to his name.

Today, Nazareth is a busy and quite congested Jewish city on top of a hill in the Galilee region of Israel. A huge basilica, the Saint Joseph Church, was built by the Franciscans on top of the place believed to be the abode of St. Joseph.
