Jerusalem, The Holiest Place on Earth (A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land)

Holy Sepulchre Church

A pilgrimage to the Holy Land cannot be called that without a visit to the place most revered by three of the world’s biggest monotheistic religions: the walled city of Old Jerusalem.

Built on top of the spot traditionaly and historically believed to be the location of the Empty Tomb of Jesus (same tomb known in the Bible as the Tomb of Joseph of Arimathea), the Holy Sepulchre Church is the most visited place inside the walled city.  Right at its entrace is the Stone of the Anointing.  Believed to be continuously secreting a frangrant fluid, the miraculous slab of rock is where Jesus was laid and prepared for burial after He died on the cross in Mt. Golgotha.

Mt. Golgotha (better known to most Christians as Calvary) is also inside the Holy Sepulchre Church.  Leading to it is the Via Dolorosa (aka Via Cruzis or The Way of the Cross). Pilgrims carrying small wooden crosses retrace the cobbled pathways now flanked by Muslim stores.

To Jews and Muslims, however, the Western Wall (aka Wailing Wall) which is also located inside the walled city of Old Jerusalem, is the holiest place on Earth.
