My theory of relativity

I just read this interesting article in HowStuffWorks, which led me to my own musings about the subject of time.

Time has been a subject of curiosity for me ever since I’ve read about Albert Einstein’s theory of relatively, not that I understand any of it.  And then of course there is not a shortage of movies that delve in the subject of time travel, which tickle my curiosity all the more.

Never mind Einstein’s geeky explanation of how relative time is.  My own theory is very simple which, thanks to the HowStuffWorks article, I can now more clearly state.

Time, in my own opinion, is relative because it is all in the mind.  And since each person’s brain contains a uniquely different set of information as another, two persons will have two different perceptions of time.

We have come up with tools to somehow bridge these differing perceptions, like watches, but even these are an imperfect solution to time’s relative nature.  Two or more people may agree that the present time is 12 o’clock noon, but each of these people will have a different appreciation of 12 o’clock noon.  To one, it is a much awaited lunch break, to another, a time off to do something outside the office, to yet another, a time for meditation, etc.

A child anticipating a visit to the dentist may find the passage of time too fast for comfort.  After all he dreads the moment that he gets to meet his dentist.  On the other hand, the same child may find time too slow while waiting for a trip to the zoo.

My own curiosity on the subject of time is a reflection of my many struggles with it.  I always seem to be running short of time.  Too little time to finish my personal projects, too little time to read, too little time to accomplish my “bucket list,” and so on.

I hope I will not run out of time when it comes to the things in life that really matter… like my faith, my family.  For everything else time may quickly pass me by.  I couldn’t care less.  But for the things that really matter to me, I hope time will leisurely bide itself.  In slowmo if you will.
