Mother and Child

January 10, 2010

My ex-girlfriend is deeply moved whenever she sees a mother and child portrait or painting. †She’s been raring to have one in the house, though we haven’t yet gotten to acquiring one. †We almost did when we had our family outing in White Rock in Subic. †In the hotel boutique were some paintings for sale and, as expected, a particularly beautiful mother and child piece stood out and got her attention.

The painting, we were told, was for sale for P4,000. †Neither of us has bought a painting before so we have no idea what’s a good price for a painting. †She was dead set to buy it nevertheless… until I serendipitously stumbled on a price tag written on a strip of masking tape at the back of the frame. †Scribbled on it was P3,500.

Always the smart alec that I am I challenged the store personnel about it. †Store personnel, as they often are, do not know how to deal with a curve ball when one is thrown at them. †They hardlined on P4,000 without offering an explanation for the P3,500 tag. †Finally we hit an impasse and I succeeded in dissuading my ex-girlfriend from pushing through with the purchase.

Shortly after leaving White Rock I had a terrible guilt attack. †My ex-girlfriend really, badly wanted the mother and child painting and she was melancholic about the foiled purchase. †I started questioning the wisdom behind my dissuading her to make the purchase simply because there was a discrepancy in the price quoted by the store personnel and that P3,500 price tag. †Perhaps p4,000 was a reasonable price to pay. †After all, if my ex-girlfriend really wanted the painting then it must have a much higher value in relation to its P4,000 price. †What’s a P500 difference anyway? †(Maybe that was my Ilocano genes asserting itself, LOL).

Then and there I vowed to myself to find a nice mother and child painting for my ex-girlfriend without much regard to the price (as long as I can afford it, that is).

While having lunch at Subic on our way back to Manila I was hit by a sudden surge of inspiration when I saw my ex-girlfriend carrying 4-year old Johan who fell asleep shortly after we left White Rock. †Right there in front of me was a “mother and child” portrait, and I wasted no time in capturing the moment with our trusty digicam. †Or maybe it was still the pangs of guilt torturing my subconscious.
