“Good, better, best” used to have an entirely different meaning to us a decade ago. †Burt, Dyk, JB, Poms and myself coined “good, better, best” as our not-so-secret code to describe our once-in-a-bluemoon escapades. †After weeks of hard-core, geeky work we would decide to paint the town red on Pom’s trusty old Honda Civic ESi. †As you might have guessed, “good” refers to the first stage of our 3-stage adventures. †”Best” is the ultimate stage, and though we might have bragged about a lot of “bests,” the truth is we often hardly reach that stage. †Either we were already all too drunk mid-way on “better” or our cash reserves had already ran dry.
Memories, memories… they seem to grow more with age, didn’t you notice?
Last September 19, 2009 the “good, better, best” boys had a very rare get-together together with a few of their closest friends and former colleagues in ACISystems, the IBM wholly-owned subsidiary where our lives met. †From what I can remember, the last time we were this complete was on December 8, 2000 — the day I gave up my freedom. †And the very last time that the “good, better, best” boys went out for a “good, better, best” escapade was when they gave me a stag party.
With us on September 19 were Jeth and Marie (my ex-girlfriend). †We were also joined by Ciena (Pom’s ex-girlfriend) and daughter Bienne, Jen (Dyk’s ex-girlfriend), and Jigger (Jeth’s beau). †We missed the company of Aryan, Liezel, and Eden (and ex-boyfriend Justin).
As to be expected, we talked of the good ol’ days as if it was just yesterday. †Because some of the girls were with us we didn’t really talk about our “good, better, best” moments. †But we had a great time together nonetheless. †It was very good to be together again with very dear friends although only for a very brief moment. †I am very happy that all of my friends are doing very well with their respective careers and family life. †JB and Burt remain single (or at least that’s what they would want us to believe) but seem to be enjoying their freedom.
I would like to think that “good, better, best” has taken a new meaning in our lives. †We are a bunch of good old friends, with our better halves (officially or otherwise) enjoying the best times of our lives.
