Is the Rubik’s Cube a geek’s toy or a nerd’s toy?

Contrary to what most people believe, nerds are not necessarily geeks, and vice versa. Which begs the question: is the Rubik Cube intended for the geeks or the nerds?

Thank goodness there is now the Rubik’s TouchCube, which should allow both the geeks and nerds among us to lay claim on the most successful toy of all times.

The Rubik’s TouchCube is a fully touch-sensitive version of the old and classic Rubik’s Cube.

Here’s a summary of what it has to offer:

  • It glows in the dark so you can play with it even in the dark.
  • It is touchscreen. You no longer have to twist it (goodbye hand exercise).
  • It has an undo feature, so you don’t need to remember what was the last state you want to get back into.
  • Here’s the best feature: It has HINT options. (made for cheats)
  • Another great feature: It remembers your place even if you turn it off — great for those of us who will likely spend their remaining years trying to solve it just once. LOL!

So how does it work?

Here’s how? Each of its six sides are touch-sensitive, and the cube’s got an internal accelerometer so that it only recognizes the touching going on on the top side of the cube.

Where can you buy one? And how much?

It was supposed to have been introduced in Europe early this year according to some tech forums I saw. But a visit to the Rubik’s Touch Cube Website would seem to indicate that it is to be released yet. I checked it on Amazon and it is not yet there so I guess that’s conclusive. We’ll just have to wait.

We may actually need the waiting time, because from tech-blog chatters I got the Rubik’s Touch Cube is going to hit store shelves for an introductory price of $149.99.
