WITH†already 30 confirmed cases in the Philippines as of this morning, June 5, this should now be everybody’s concern. †Being well-informed is always the best defense, and information the best medicine. †So I am sharing herewith these basic information to any body who may be interested. †These may sound too simple and obvious to those who are already “in the know” but may prove lifesaving to those who are still clueless as what this global concern is all about.

Basic Q&A

Q: †How does Influenza A (H1N1) virus spread?

A: †Through droplets from coughing and sneezing by people with Influenza A (H1N1); From touching infected things and then touching one’s mouth, nose, or eyes

Q: †What is the incubation period?

A: †7 to 10 days from the time of exposure to the first onset of signs and symptoms

Q: †Are there medicines to treat infection with A(H1N1)?

A: †Yes. †You have to consult a doctor before using these drugs to avoid resistance.

Quarantine

The Department of Health (DOH) has advised all those who arrived from countries that have reported cases of A(H1N1) flu virus — especially those who exhibit flu symptoms such as fever and cough — to practice self-quarantine to prevent the spread of the novel virus in the community.

Health Tips for Prevention

  • Always wash hands with soap and water
  • Avoid close contact with sick people
  • Avoid crowded places
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers
  • Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing
  • Increase your body’s resistance:
    • Be physically active
    • Drink plenty of fluids
    • Manage your stress
    • Eat a well balanced diet
    • Have enough rest — at least 8 hours of sleep every day

Symptoms

May be similar to the symptoms of regular flu:

    • Fever, fatigue, headache
    • Cough, runny nose, sore throat
    • Lack of appetite
    • Nausea and vomiting / Diarrhea
