DICTIONARIES are necessarily utilitarian by nature, some more so than others. †So when I find a dictionary that is truly utilitarian but at the same time immensely entertaining as well, I immediately buy it.
Good for me, dictionaries — the printed kind, that is — are slowly becoming a thing of the past. †Several dictionary services are now available online, including dictionary “consolidation” services which pull word meanings from different online dictionaries and other online sources. †My favorites, of course, are Dictionary.com and Google! †Yes, Google! †I believe I have blogged a couple of times in the past that one of the cool functions of Google is as a dictionary (see The Legend of Google and I love Google!).
My latest great find on the Web is another dictionary. †But this is no ordinary dictionary. †It is called the Urban Dictionary, and it is a†’slang’ dictionary. †The other cool feature of Urban Dictionary is that,†much like Wikipedia.org,†anybody may submit/contribute contents to it.
What good is a slang dictionary? †As far as I am concerned it is very, very good, especially in this day and age where new jargons and all sort of weird acronyms are coined or invented, especially with the exponential proliferation of of e-mail, chat, and text messaging. †Hey,†DWT (Driving While Texting) is a no-no! †I’m IBM (Italian By Marriage). †Sad but that’s SOML (the Story Of My Life), LOL (Laughing Out Loud). †URAQT†(yoU aRe A cutie), wanna do EB (eye-ball)?††Gotta go, CYL (call you later).†Got the drift?
