PH is still world’s SMS capital
†
HERE ARE SOME mind-boggling statistics on SMS/text messaging in the Philippines:
†
- 2.37 billion text messages were recorded over the 2008/2009 Christmas and New Year period. †No that is not the total figure for the entire world. †That is just for the Philippines. †That’s roughly 36 text messages per mobile subscriber!†
- In comparison, the total volume for the whole Asia-Pacific region for the same period is just†6.37 billion text messages. †In other words, PH accounts for almost 40% of the total text messaging volume for the whole Asia-Pacific.
- Also in comparison, Indonesia, the world’s 4th biggest country in terms of population (approximately 235 million as of 2007) just recorded 1.193 billion text messages over the same period.
- BTW, text messaging in the Philippines increased by 65% compared to the 2007/2008 Christmas and New Year period.
- Reports vary on the actual total number of mobile subscribers in the Philippines, but the figures are not far from each other. †They are lurking on 66 million… or thereabouts. †Considering that our population is just about 91 million, that’s a pretty high penetration rate.
†
One way to look at the 2.37 billion text messages is to get their monetary equivalent. †Using †a simple formula of 1 peso per text message, that’s 2.37 billion pesos! †That could have built thousands of homes for the homeless, or sent thousands of marginalized kids to school.
