Sent from my iPhone

ONE OF MY FAVORITE iPhone applications is E-mail.† Ever since I started using the iPhone I can already check my e-mails anytime and almost anywhere, even when I am driving. †I know that’s not safe but that’s the problem with Smartphones like the Blackberry and, in my case, the iPhone. †I read my e-mails even while driving because my iPhone allows me to.

Most of the time I just read new incoming e-mails on my iPhone and usually reply to them when I get to work on my laptop.† But from time to time, ever so seldom, I would press the reply or forward button to send a short message in SMS fashion like “OK,” “Copy,” “Nope,” etcetera.

It so happens that iPhone has a default signature text for all outgoing e-mails sent from it.† It says, “Sent from my iPhone.”†

I’ve always been aware about it because I have already seen it from e-mails sent to me by my boss who started using the iPhone a couple of months before I did. However, I did not really give it much thought.† That is, until some of my friends started appending some weird e-mail signature texts to their e-mail messages to me.

My favorite came from Trina Moll, a close friend who is also an MBA classmate in UP and a former colleague in IBM.† In one reply e-mail to me she appended the following after her name:

“Sent from my super hi-tech-mega-memory-ultra-speedy-features-with am/fm radio †nokia phone!”

Frankly I do not understand at all the hostility. †It may sound like the sender is bragging that he is using an iPhone, and maybe he/she is, but who actually cares? †The iPhone may be the coolest gadget now but something is bound to steal the spotlight from it sooner or later (most probably sooner). †In my case I don’t even personally own my iPhone. †It is company-issued, thanks to my boss, Ed Delgado.

The “Sent from my iPhone” e-mail signature actually has a practical value. †You see, when you e-mail from an iPhone it is very likely that you misspell some words because of its touchscreen QWERTY keyboard (which you don’t get used to that quickly as the folks in Apple promised). †There’s also the possibility that its sophisticated auto-suggest (i.e. dictionary) feature may suggest the wrong word from time to time. †With the “Sent from my iPhone” signature at least the recipient/s is/are already forewarned and may be more forgiving of your bad English, even if it is really bad in the first place. :-D

But there is no way I will attempt to argue that point with my friends, especially Trina. †So to avoid further controversies I decided to change my iPhone’s e-mail signature.

I finally managed to do that yesterday. †My iPhone’s e-mail signature now reads: Visit http://awonderfulblog.com † ;-)

    >Trina: Hehehe, huwag ka na mainggit luma na iPhone ko. And I am still not adept in using its touchscreen keyboard. I love it when it correctly suggests an English word I typed incorrectly. But I hate it when it keeps on suggesting some English words when what I am trying to type are Tagalog words. Kainis.

Yabang kasi dating ng “Sent from my iPhone.”
But your argument on why the “Sent from my iPhone” signature is useful is also very good. However, I guess you’ll have to transcend the “yabang” impression before it will be appreciated.

Comment “sent from my iPhone.” :-D
