I bit the apple

I†KNEW IT is bound to happen sooner or later. †At long last… finally… I gave in to the temptation and took a bite on the Apple. †Shamelessly I now do hereby declare that I am †a Mac user. †No, I did not dump my lowly yet reliable Netbook in favor of a Mac (although it is also a fact that my Netbook is partly to blame for it, but that’s another blog item). †I also did not buy myself a new Macbook (I could not have afforded it). †I inherited a relatively old and baseline Macbook from my boss.

What makes this transition out of the ordinary is the fervor by which I tried to avoid it from ever happening.

In retrospect, I should have known that there was no use avoiding it. †Resistance is futile.

After two weeks of having been initiated into using a Mac, I can now clearly look back and analyze why I’ve been trying to avoid the inevitable and make some sense of it.

The reasons are mostly emotional. †First, having been always a populist and one who associates himself with the underdog, I find the idea of joining †the snooty, elitist Mac users a big NO-NO. †”It will never happen!” I vowed to myself. †Second, I am a big advocate of Linux and Open Source software. †My natural progression should have been Ubuntu, and my good friend and blogging buddy Dominique Cimafranca would have been proud of me.

I actually did try Ubuntu several months ago and I actually liked it a lot. †Having now tried OSX I can swear that they have lots of similarities including the “Spaces” feature which I quickly learned to love on the OSX. †Unfortunately, my playing and tinkering on Ubuntu was short lived primarily because I had to move on to test new technologies, particularly the Netbooks which were just being introduced at the time.

I guess I will just have to accept that it is an essential part of my job to try out all available technologies out there. †As a CIO I cannot afford to be too emotionally attached to a particular device or platform. †It works both ways actually. †I also shouldn’t close my eyes on any particular technology only because I do not particularly like it (or I think I do not like it).

So here I am, on a cozy corner of Starbucks somewhere in Makati writing my blog post on my new darling, a hand-me-down Macbook. †For a few times now I did catch myself feeling proud, flaunting my Macbook. †Oh no, I am becoming one of them snooty, elitist Mac users!

On the other hand, please allow me to enjoy the feeling while it lasts. †In a few months, or maybe even a few weeks or a few days I may once more be moving on to the next piece of technology that lands on my lap. †Thus is the life of a tecno-geek — bravely going to “where no man has gone before.”
