CHROME IS ALL OVER the place since last week. All the tech Websites, online forums and info tech sections of major newspapers are abuzz with the newest browser from Google. Even my CEO already asked my opinion on Chrome last week shortly after I read about it in CIO.com.
And why not?† It seems Google can’t do anything wrong these days.† Chrome’s development has been cloaked in secrecy.† Its surprise announcement last week caught everyone off guard, further fueling the heated discussions.
So far I like everything I’ve been reading about Chrome, especially it’s ultra minimalist design, which is what I like the most with Safari and Firefox (and what I hate the most with IE).† I also like a lot its start-up page showing nine of the most recently visited sites.† I think that’s going to be a big time saver.
There’s one particular feature of the Chrome that really excites me: the “Create Application Shortcuts” command.† This will supposedly create an icon of the Website or Web application that you are creating a shortcut of on the desktop and when you click on the icon it will open the Website or Web application without the usual address/URL bar. Wow!† That would mean that Web-based business applications will now look very similar to regular Windows-based GUI applications.† The dividing line between Web-based and non-Web-based applications is now disappearing.
I am usually cautious about using newly announced products.† If it’s from Microsoft I would not touch it at all. But since this one is from Google I couldn’t wait to have it downloaded into my computer, even if it is clearly still a beta release.† After all, I started with Gmail, and Google Earth, and Google Apps, all on beta.† I think most (if not all) of them are still on beta right now, yet millions worldwide are already using them and are quite satisfied.† So what the heck…
Btw, I already posted this blog entry using Chrome. #

Hi Conrad, to date Chrome is available only on Windows. But don’t be sad. Surely, the linux and mac versions are forthcoming. They should be available anytime soon.
