I KNEW THAT my friend, Mitz Picardal, is really serious with his new-found hobby when he sent me a copy of his award-winning photo dubbed Banca Smoke earlier this year. Banca Smoke was awarded first prize under the ìnatureî category in an online photo competition, a contest participated in by thousands of photographers, both amateurs and professionals, worldwide.
Mitz has been my friend since college and I’ve known how talented he is. He is a born artist ñ a virtuoso with the guitar and several other musical instruments.
His interest in Photography, as far as I know, is relatively new. A few years back he was into mountaineering. He still is, I believe, though no longer as focused on it as he used to be. He now eats and sleeps photography.
Although impressed by Banca Smoke I really didn’t pay much attention to the rest of Mitz’s photography work until a few days ago. Last Friday, while checking out Karate Kids, the latest blog post of our common buddy, Mann Marvil (http://izekream.wordpress.com), I noticed a link to one of Mitz’s online photo galleries: http://www.pbase.com/mitzpicardal/ (It’s also now in my one of my link lists).
I was awestruck! I showed it to my ex-girlfriend and she was awestruck, too.
I took the liberty to “grab” a few of Mitz’s photos from his online gallery to “tease” you with.
Surreal is how I would describe Mitz’s photographic masterpieces. He seems to paint over his subjects with his play of vivid colors. My guess is he is using a combination of color and softening filters to achieve his effects. Either that or he does his effects rendering on a computer. Either way, his style is distinct and really good. Really mitzy. Oh, that’s a word I just coined to describe Mitz’s unique brand of photography: mitzy.
Incidentally, Mitz is conducting a photography seminar soon. Yes, he now teaches his new craft. That’s how serious with Photography he has become. He was even invited by a Photography club in Dubai to give a lecture a few months ago.
His forthcoming photography seminar on August 2, from 9am to 5pm, is billeted as ìStop Seeing the World Through a Frame: A Workshop on VR and Panoramic Photographyî. For more details go to http://mitzpicardal.multiply.com/.
Registration fee is only P2,000. Half of the registration fees will help save the life of a child through the Cancer Warriors Foundation.
Hey, I am not advertising his seminar to get a free seat. I am paying, too.

Hey Bong,
Mitz indeed has the knack for photography. I particularly like the Ortigas skyline.
His seminar would surely be a great experience.
