SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

One of the primary reasons I got myself actively blogging is this concept of Search Engine Optimization. SEO is fast gaining popularity among Internet savvy folks, especially those who are involved in Web 2.0 technologies. But frankly, it is still a very vague concept to me.

I first came across the term SEO in some articles in www.CIO.com to which I am subscribed to. But I didn’t pay much attention to them as the term and concept were completely unknown to me then.

Then I read a featured article on the Manila Bulletin section, Tecnews, under the column BLOG-O-RAMA by Annlyn S. Jusay (http://annalyn.net) on Feb 18, 2008. The article is about a young lady blogger, Rhiza Sanchez, who writes and maintains a seemingly popular blog called Guitarchic (http://guitarchic.net).

Rhiza, according to the article, is a professional SEO. Not just an ordinary SEO practitioner but one of the few female professional SEOs in the Philippines. The article gave me some idea of what SEO is but at that point it was still very much abstract. IOW, I still couldn’t dig it.

And then I got an inquiry and request for assistance from Jose Paolo L. Delgado, eldest son of my boss and CEO, Jose Eduardo C. Delgado. Paolo, who is also a director and executive committee member in the company I work for ñ Delbros, Inc., wants to know how his name will be more associated with Delbros when googled or yahooed.

You see, Paolo is also the President of BHI Group, and a very successful businessman in his own right. He is also very active in the Scouting Movement, just like his dad and his grandpa, the late Ambassador Antonio Delgado. So when you google his name, you’ll get numerous hits but mostly in relation to the BHI Group and his involvements in Scouting.

As a member of the Delbros Board of Directors (and the heir apparent to the Delbros empire) he wants to be also associated with his family’s pioneering company when somebody googles his name. Sounds reasonable.

Through this inquiry from Paolo, all of a sudden the SEO dots connected themselves in my brain. It was a big AHA! moment for me. That’s it. SEO is about making certain words (e.g. a person’s name) highly ìsearchableî in the World Wide Web as well as ìclosely linkedî with the appropriate or desired associations (e.g. an organization, an industry, a cause, etc.). Of course the practice of SEO involves some specialized talents, tools, and tecniques. But at least I understand the concept now. Or I think I do.

Shortly thereafter I also heard from my friend Sherwin De Jesus that our good friend, Boogie Boydon (http://cyberoutsource.net) of the Ateneo Professional Schools in Makati, is into SEO as well. In fact, I believe Boogie set up a new business that specializes in SEO consulting. I should sit down with Boogie one day soon and learn more about SEO from him. #
