Philippine Pali ñ Highest Point in the Philippine Highway System

A minor but interesting ìside showî feature of our recently completed trip to Mt. Timbak some 55 kilometers north of Baguio City within the province of Benguet is a single spot at Kilometer 52 along the famous Halsema Highway.

That point is called PHILIPPINE PALI. It is supposedly the highest point in any highway in the entire Philippines.

The point cannot be missed, unless you are sleeping during the trip, for it has a conspicuous marker and a view deck right by the road side.

According to the marker, PHILIPPINE PALI is 7,400 feet above sea level or 2,255.52 meters above sea level (MASL). For comparison, our objective for the trip, Mt. Timbak, is 2,717 MASL.

I have traveled along Halsema Highway only once before our Mt. Timbak trip the other day. I was with my ex-girlfriend and another couple and we came from the famous Sagada Caves in Mountain Province and all the way from the even more famous Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao province. I must have been sleeping during that trip because I didn’t remember noticing PHILIPPINE PALI. Or perhaps I was too travel weary (we all were) because Halsema Highway was still a terrible road during that time. That was in 2001. I am very pleased to see that Halsema is now a very nice highway. #
